Why My Love For Blogging Is Your Gain

My-love-for-blogging-is-your-gainYesterday was my blogging month anniversary.  I know I spend a lot of time on this blog trying to convince other people to start their own blogs in order to increase their web presence, increase their SEO, and prove themselves an authority in their field.  I hope I have convinced a few.  Today I wanted to point out that I am doing exactly what I preach.  This blog is not just a blog, but a part of my overall social media writing business.  I write this blog to help small business owners, but also to do everything I stated above for my own small business.

In another attempt to prove that a blog is worth the time and effort it requires, here are the top five reasons I love to blog and I impart this knowledge to you hoping it will motivate you to start your own blog.

1.)   It is a wonderful way to become engaged with other business owners and bloggers and feel part of a community

Truthfully, I still get the shocked good-feeling tingles when I see someone has left a comment on a post, or re-tweeted something I’ve written.  It allows me to feel part of a community, to know that others are reading what I write and find value in it.  I also enjoy trolling the web for new stories that I find interesting and want to share with others.  It is a give and take, and I have conversed with some wonderful people and found some fantastic new blogs to keep track of.  Being a part of a community can not be underrated.

2.)   I learn something new everyday

It is impossible to have a Google reader with hundreds of blogs in it and not learn something.  Today I learned about Facebook places.  Who knows what I will learn tomorrow.  Being connected to this community is like having a higher education in all things blogger.  I remind myself that knowledge is power and I absorb all I possibly can.

3.)   I increase my online presence and gain credibility

If my business website did not have a blog and someone Googled me, would they be impressed with just seeing a Facebook page and static website?  I don’t know, but I feel good knowing if someone is thinking of hiring me, and checks me out, they will see a month’s worth of blog posts that I have worked hard on.  This way they know I will work hard for them too.

4.)   I gain business

I have gained business through my website, not enough to buy me a penthouse in Trump Towers, but hey, it’s only been a month.  This gives me the encouragement to keep on doing what I’m doing.  Who knows how many people will find me in two months or three.

5.)   This one is personal – I get to write everyday

I have always loved to write.  I suspect every English major does, but I used to put it off and put it off.  Being responsible for this blog forces me to write 600-800 words everyday.  I have never done this before and I can honestly say if I were to stop, I’d miss it.  So this one is personal, but perhaps there is something about keeping a blog that would encourage you to take a step you’ve been meaning to but just needed a push.

Do you have a blog?  If not, do you think if you started a blog you’d end up loving it?  Does my happiness with running a blog convince you to start?  Or do you need even more nudging?

  1. I think bloggers who experiment and share their trials and tribulations not only gain followers and respect, but also others gain from their experience as well. A well written article.

    1. Hi Justin,

I agree that bloggers who share are better for it. I will continue to share as I go on my blogging journey. Thanks for the comment.

  2. Rebecca,
while not a small business owner, reading your blog and learning more about blogging has encouraged me to pay more attention to my own blog and make a concerted effort to writing more often. I have written about once every two days this month, and have written half as many posts this month (12) as I have in the previous 7 months combined (24).
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Greg,

I’m really glad to hear my blog has encouraged you to blog more as well. I really enjoy reading what you write and think you’re doing a great thing by bringing epilepsy more into the open.

      Thanks,

      Rebecca
